Portrait silkscreen collaboration - Nicola Green

Portrait silkscreen collaboration

Collaborative silkscreen portrait produced by Jonathan Comerford ,for artist Nicola Green.

The artist Nicola Green contracted Jonathan to assist her in producing a multiple image portrait, using silkscreen. The commission was to produce a bespoke portrait for a client, of their four children. The artist, being a portraitist, chose to produce the work using silkscreen as a creative challenge and as limited editioned prints for her client.

The artist`s concept was to design and compose an artwork to be multi - functional, to be seen as a single complete piece or as four individual artworks, each individually framed.

As with most portrait commissions there is a long process of development between the artist and their client to research and develop the ideal image the client feels content with. In this instance, the challenge for the artist was that, in using an in direct medium such as printing making as opposed to painting, she could not provide definitive image process to her client other than trial colour and image proof prints, on a small draft scale.

As the master printer, Jonathan worked in close collaboration with the artist to provide and research technical possibilities to assist the artist in conceptualising, designing and ultimately creating the final artwork.  The process also involved Jonathan  collating the images the artist chose to use and produce necessary colour and image proofs to present, periodically, to her client. Once the approved images and colours were chosen, the resizing of the images to scale and mixing of colours were then fabricated ready for printing.

Due to the scale of the images the work was unable to be produced in the artist`s studio. Pellafort Press in Brixton, London, was chosen where Jonathan produced the final artwork.
